  • Transcription of Statement at Inquest of Charles Ward 14-8-1903.

    Fred Greenstreet, 65 Shrubbery Road, West Green - I was going out on my bike I saw a crowd on the Green opposite the School Board Offices about 5.20 this morning. I stopped to see what was the matter I saw deceased was foaming at the mouth I loosened all his clothes I went on my bike for a Doctor as fast as I could ride – Dr. Millar would not come he sent me to the police – I then went to the police on point duty in West Green Road he went to the man I went for Dr. Sykes – I went back to green and found the man was removed into the offices and was quite dead.

    Samuel Norris.  I live at 26 Cornwall Road West Green.  I have known the man 10 or 12 years  I saw him passing West Green Station 4.15 yesterday afternoon with a friend they both went & laid down on the Common they were perfectly sober – I saw a commotion later on on the Common the deceased tried to rise as if to go towards the seat & fell back – his friend fetched a drop of brandy on returning dec.d could not take it he was then unconscious foaming at mouth. Dr. Millar refused to have anything to do with the call.  I fetched a constable from St. Annes P. Station- when I came back he was dead –
    I never knew him to have anything but a cold the matter with him.

    28N Arthur Solomon P.C.  about 5.20 last night I was fetched by witness Greenstreet I went to the ground near Downhill Schools dec.d was dead when I got there – I recovered body to school board office – Dr. Sykes saw him & said life was extinct – I then removed body to custody on police ambulance.

    John Lewis Sykes of York House, West Green Rod.  Called by police & also by a friend of my own when I arrived the man was quite dead –
    Formal examn. made at the hospital I put in report.
