  • Nov 27, 2017 ancestry contact

    Greetings,

I am an experienced DNA genealogy researcher.
Using my late father's Ancestry DNA kit results, I was doing a place name DNA match search for persons born in Deptford, Kent, England when I ran across your kit, which must be fairly new.

I noticed that on your father’s line you have this person
    Eliza(beth?) KNIGHT
BIRTH EST 1824 • Deptford, Kent, England
DEATH 24 MAR 1896 • St Olave Southwark

    You show her father as:
    John KNIGHT
BIRTH (INT 1780/99 (UNKNOWN)) • Unknown
    DEATH AFT 1780 • Unknown

As Dad had Knight ancestors from the Deptford, Kent area I compared your information with what we knew about the Knight’s of Deptford. I even went so far as to create a new tree to try and connect our families working backwards from what you had found and then downwards in my tree. This was one of the more challenging research tasks I have attempted but in the end managed to solve the puzzle.

The bottom line is that I am now convinced that we are 5th cousins.
I believe that your Eliza(beth?) Knights full name was:

    Eliza Whitney Knight
BIRTH 10 JAN 1825 • Deptford, Kent, England
DEATH 24 MAR 1896 • St Olave Southwark, London, England

She had a younger sister named:
    Jane Rebecca Knight
BIRTH 15 JUL 1823 • Deptford, Kent, England
    DEATH Unknown
Both daughters’ baptism records list their father John’s occupation as “Waterman”. This was also the occupation of our Knight ancestors which had me convinced I was on the right track.

The two daughters’ parents' full names turned out to be:
    Eliza Whitney Sampson
BIRTH ABT. 1804 • Deptford, Kent, England
    DEATH JUL 1839
    AND
    John Knight
BIRTH ABT. 1796 • Deptford, Kent, England
DEATH APR 1837 • Deptford, Kent, England
They married on 28 Dec 1822 at St Paul, Deptford, England. Fortunately, the middle name Whitney appeared in the actual record image in England, Pallot's Marriage Index, 1780-1837 and from there I was able to find other marriage records. Whitney is not a common middle name and it really helped that both mother and daughter shared it.

However, for some time, I wondered why I could not find this couple and their daughters in either the 1841 or 1851 census. The reason became apparent when I searched the death records and realized that both parents had tragically died in the late 1830s leaving their two daughters orphaned. Daughter Rebecca appears to have died young (bef. 1851 I suspect) but does seem to have married in 1843. The 1841 census is interesting as it shows her living with an unnamed two-month old Knight baby. I wonder if that child ended up living with his maternal aunt Eliza (your ancestor)? I mention this because in your tree you show a Knight child living with Eliza Witney Knight (Shrimpton) who is about the right age for that child.

Anyway, as it turns out your John Knight is my 4 times great-uncle. His sister is our ancestor. Her name was:
    Elizabeth Knight
BIRTH ABT 1792 • Deptford, Kent, England
DEATH APR 1847 • Greenwich, London, England
    She is my 3rd great-grandmother

John Knight and his sister Elizabeth were in turn the children of this couple:
    Charles Knight
BIRTH ABT. 1765 • Rotherhithe, Surrey, England
DEATH ABT 1810 • Deptford, Kent, England
    AND
    Mary Warder
BIRTH ABT. 1772 • Dog Street, Deptford, Kent, England
    DEATH Unknown
In DNA speak they are “the most recent common ancestors” and one or both of them had to be responsible for passing on the DNA strand you and my Dad share.

If you add this couple’s names date and place information to your DNA linked tree (and it is identical to what we have in our tree) then the AncestryDNA computers should give you a DNA Hint that shows you the pedigrees on both our sides down to my father.

Like your John Knight, his father Charles was also a Waterman.

Charles and Mary had other children too; another one was named:
    Mary Joannah Knight
BIRTH ABT. DEC 1800 • Deptford, Kent, England
I also have a DNA match on my father’s kit to one of her descendants which makes it more likely then not that the match to your kit is indicative of a “solid” “identical by descent” DNA match.

Now, in the course of doing my research I found many ‘bad’ ancestry member trees. A common mistake seems to have been confusing your John with another John Knight who was a cabinet maker living in Tonbridge, Kent, England who in 1815 married a woman named Elizabeth Blackey b.1795- . This is clearly incorrect (the location and occupation don’t fit) and I believe the DNA connection to yourself now proves that the Tonbridge John was not the son of Charles Knight and Mary Warder as many had assumed. I mention this because to my knowledge no one else has correctly worked out the connection between Charles and Mary and your father’s Shrimpton ancestors.
I trust you find the information useful as you build your tree.
You may be able to see the match & our tree by clicking on the blue "View the match" link at the bottom of this email.
Best regards from your “new-found” Canada cousin,

    John C. Maguire
