  • When Mary was in hospital having Brian her half sister Bertha's Stan visited as Bertha was due to have her first (David) some months later and Stan wanted to see where the place was. The nursing staf f mistook Stan for Mary's husband Tom, who was away in the Army at the time.

    Mary also appeared on a Terrestrial TV program (2002/2003) that was documenting the Union History at Ford Motor Company and she appeared in the background of a crowd shot twice outside 10 Downing Stre et, the footage was possible from the 1970/80's.
    Above was shown on a Channel 4 Documentary about Equal pay for women when Mary was a Trade Unionist and was filmed during a strike at the Ford Plant Dagenham.

    No 76 was. The Ford machinists strike of 1968 started at Dagenham and paved the way for the Equal Pay Act 1970 - a story currently being made into a major feature film called "We Want Sex".

    Mary Hitchcock as she was by then was a very strong character involved in these strieks leading to lasting change in legislation relating to Female workers.
